Euro Media Forum and Eden Cinemas, present The Frank Miller event at The Sofa Cinema at University Msida Campus on Monday 15th September at 6.30 p.m. Frank Miller re-defined the presentation of comic book characters and heroic fiction for the big screen by bringing to the fore a deeper and darker vision form of noir storytelling through conflicted characters to both comic fans whilst attracting a new adult audience. Miller’s revolutionary work was launched with his grand-daddy of graphic novels, The Dark Knight Returns that not only was a source of inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy but ensured that his uniquely dark take on the comic book narrative would leap onto the big screen. Certainly chief among Miller’s works is 300 directed by Zack Snyder which was filmed with a super-imposition chroma key technique, to help replicate the imagery of the original comic book. However, Hollywood’s Dark Knight truly outdid himself when he directed Sin City together with Robert Rodriguez. Sin City blew audiences away with its hardboiled characters and unique colour processing that managed to make a film look more like a comic book come to life as opposed to just a live-action film and the entertainment industry finally recognized that a comic book can be literally translated not adapted for the big screen.
Guest speakers’ comic book researcher David Pace and film researcher Justin Camilleri will lead the audience into a greater appreciation for this American writer, artist, and film director. The speakers will give an insight into how Miller’s dark comic book storytelling marked the moment comics stopped being so colourful and his succeeding to translate his comic book world of silvery shadows to the big screen managed to revive the expressionist cinematography of postwar film noir for a new generation.
The audience is invited to participate and put forward to the guest speaker their questions, curiosities and observations. To spice up the evening there will also be a Frank Miller quiz, with the opportunity to win cinema tickets and a free pizza meal for two. So quiz participants must keep their eyes open for Frank Miller’s sinful clues! The film discussion is being done in collaboration with Eden Cinemas, Vintage Boutique (Savoy Arcade, Valletta), Comics in Education and Giotto restaurant. Entrance is free however limited seating is available. For bookings please email euromediaforum@gmail.com or send an sms to 99454066, or log in http://www.facebook.com/Euro.Media.Forum
