‘Il-Beżżul Bieżel’ in its simplest form, is a Maltese comical and satirical newspaper. It contains satirical and parodical comics and articles on current local and foreign affairs, cultural issues, international relations, social injustices, social commentary, slight politics and much more. It is important to note that it is not a political newspaper and does not fall under any right-wing or left-wing political parties, however it does include well-known Maltese figures in the political sphere through a neutral lens.

The newspaper’s humour is directed towards the Maltese plight, hence why it is named ‘Il-Beżżul Bieżel’ which would translate to ‘The Busy Misfortunate’, which may sound odd at first and yet, still doesn’t do the name justice in English. Furthermore, ‘Il-Beżżul Bieżel’ is referring to the ‘Maltese man’ mentality, encapsulating both culture and mind. One may think it is a critique of the Maltese man (referring to the population and culture), but it is rather an observation and satirisation of what clearly seems ridiculous in either his reasoning, world view or even his overall perception of the outside world. Paradoxically, you could say, it is a ‘realistic caricature’ of what is observably ridiculous.
