Paris in the 1950s. In the heyday of Jean-Paul Sartre, a new literary star emerges. When poet and book thief Daniel Brodin enters the Café Serbier, home of the Parisian literati, one luminary suggests opening the floor to an unknown. Seizing the opportunity, Daniel reads not one of his own surrealist poems but an obscure piece of Italian verse he’s certain no one will recognise. It’s a triumph, and it marks his entrance into the Parisian avant-garde: a band of cultured rogues for whom life is a playground for art, whether plotting a novel or planning a heist. In this milieu, the company is as intoxicating as the wine – but will success lose its dazzle if it is built on theft Memoirs of a Book Thief is a witty and original drama from Alessandro Tota and Pierre Van Hove that explores the shifting boundaries between art and reality. Drawing on the concepts of existentialism, situationism and psychogeography, and echoing the films of the Nouvelle Vague, Memoirs of a Book Thief examines the nature of authenticity and the clash between art and the establishment. It lovingly recreates the vibrant, often frenzied atmosphere of literary Paris after the war.
