Robocop: Melding man and machine presentation and discussion

Euro Media Forum presents Robocop: Melding man and machine presentation and discussion on Saturday 8th February 2014 at 2.15 p.m. at Students House Common Room – University of Malta tal-Qroqq.

From the powerful Robocop cyborg ridding us from crime in the streets, to the deadly Terminator muttering that immortal line: I’ll be back! From Star Wars friendly droids R2D2 and C3PO and Star Trek‘s android Data, robots in movies have transported us to a galaxy far away or a future of limitless technology. However, the rise of the robots is closer than we think as robots already assist medics in surgery, the elderly and disabled not to mention army servicemen’s exoskeleton that bears a striking resemblance to Tony Stark’s Ironman. Robot technology has invaded our domestic bliss further than we think as they can vacuum our homes, scrub the floor and can avoid obstacles like furniture, walls, stairs and pets. But can these robots ever become reality? Robot researcher David Pace will give an insight into how cyborgs and robots have been portrayed in Hollywood films, and the science fact behind the Robocop fiction. He will attempt to answer if we can build a Robocop with today’s technology and if they can faithfully mimic human emotion, be surprisingly cunning and possess intelligence equal to man? And if eventually can Robots take over the world!

The event will be followed by an open discussion, and Robots in film Robocop 1980s and 2014 reboot Film quiz a Robocop Easter egg. Entrance is 10 euros and includes free drinks and nibbles. No special science background is required. For bookings please email euromediaforum@gmail.com or send an sms to 99454066, or log in http://www.facebook.com/Euro.Media.Forum for further information.
