The Witcher – Trailer Review By The Maltese Geek (James Aquilina)

I finally got around to seeing the trailer for the upcoming Witcher Netflix series, and so far I’m liking what I’m seeing. Yet, I did notice a few discrepancies.

For those who aren’t aware of what the Witcher is, just imagine what would happen if Lord of the Rings was darker, and more mature. The protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, is a trained monster hunter who has underwent mutations in order to properly kill any beast or demon that crosses his path.

From the trailer, Henry Cavill seems like a great Geralt. He wasn’t my ideal choice for casting, but the man knows how to be intimidating when he wants to, and he has the physique to match.

The sorceress Yennefer, who in the books and games, is Geralt’s on-again off-again love interest, is portrayed quite well and is similar to her novel counterpart, but I’m holding my full judgement until the series drops.

Ciri, in my opinion, doesn’t seem to be similar to either the books or the games. Silver hair, green eyes, and a scar on her cheek. Now, we could see her change throughout the series, but as it currently is, it’s not that good. Here’s hoping her performance makes up for it.

Lastly, the overall themes and visuals surrounding the show look on point. This is coming from someone who is a big fan of the Witcher.

Overall, with some minor improvements, and a bit more polish, this could end up being a great show. Trailer was really good, and I’m stoked to find out more. I’d give this trailer a B+.
