Following its world premiere screening in Porto Alegre at the โ€œFantaspoaโ€ festival, the M.A. in Film Studies at the University of Malta is excited to announce the second-ever showing of ๐˜พ๐™๐™ž๐™ก๐™™๐™ง๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™’๐™ž๐™˜๐™ ๐™š๐™ง ๐™ˆ๐™–๐™ฃ, a documentary directed by ๐—๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐˜†, ๐——๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐˜† (Universitรฉ du Quรฉbec ร  Montrรฉal), and ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ก๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป (University of Birmingham), and produced by ๐—”๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ.

The 1973 cult film ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, hailed by Christopher Lee as the best film he ever starred in, not only endured a troubled production but also suffered as a box-office flop upon its initial release, tragically impacting the life of its director, ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐˜†, and his family. Five decades after the making of ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, Robin Hardyโ€™s lost papers from the years 1970-1974 came into the possession of his son Justin, thanks to the kindness of a stranger. These papers shed new light on the various phases of the filmโ€™s production and provided Justin and his half-brother Dominic with a deeper understanding of their father, with whom they shared an emotionally intense yet strained relationship.

What sets this documentary apart is Robin Hardyโ€™s perspective, as conveyed through his sons. While previous sources have primarily focused on the viewpoint of ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏโ€™s renowned scriptwriter, Anthony Shaffer, or other contributors who often portrayed Hardy unfavourably, ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ offers a glimpse into the directorโ€™s own experiences during the filmโ€™s creation, a crucial aspect that had previously been overlooked.

In 2016, Robin Hardy made his last public appearance in Malta, where he delivered a mesmerising masterclass and engaged in a lively Q&A session following the screening of the โ€œfinal cutโ€ of ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ. Both events were organised by the Faculty of Artsโ€™ M.A. in Film Studies. For Hardy, this was not just a routine trip; it was a moment of acknowledgment. Despite knowing that his days were numbered, he was determined to visit Malta and present his masterpiece one final time. Therefore, his children Justin and Dominic, along with Chris Nunn, chose to film the documentaryโ€™s concluding segment in Malta, retracing the footsteps of their late father.
