15.00 – Those we lost by Profs. Ġorġ Mallia

This informal talk presents a brief overview of some of the comic creators who died since the last Comic Con was held (i.e. roughly three years). It is a visual talk in which not just the contribution of the creators be outlined, but also elements of their artistic style analysed. This includes creators like Gene Colan, Marie Severin, Neal Adams, Joe Sinnott, Juan Gimenez, Albert Uderzo, Richard Corben, Claire Bretecher, Quino, Richard Corben, and so many others.

Ġorġ Mallia’s name is synonymous with the history of comics in Malta. In the eighties he edited the only comics ever to be published till that time. He also wrote and drew in them. He then went on to do a Masters in Communications (dealing with comics) and is respected internationally for his research in the use of comics in education. He is an Associated Professor and the Head of the Department of Media and Communications. He lectured about comics in Scandinavia and still does at Masters lever at the University of Malta. His social satirical comic strip ŻEPP appears weekly in The Sunday Times of Malta.
