Ivan Ellul Xuereb

Ivan has been writing for longer than he’s willing to admit. His first novella is hidden at the back of a drawer, inside a desk, which he threw down a bottomless pit. Fortunately, From the Vortex—his science-fantasy debut that didn’t get thrown into the abyss—was launched at Malta Comic Con in 2017.

A love letter to strange TV shows, meta-fiction, and plastic aliens, From the Vortex follows Edward Carter, a reluctant sci-fi star whose show starts to feel a little too real. Its sequel, To the Vortex, arrived in 2023, continuing Edward’s misadventures as he uncovers long-buried secrets, stranded crewmates, and unexpected reunions beneath the Earth’s surface.

In 2024, Ivan released Within the Vapours, a surreal coming-of-age novella set in a fog-choked city where gas masks are as common as backpacks—and where a newcomer’s encounter with a giant green cat might reveal stranger truths than anyone expects.

Outside of prose, Ivan has written for the Maltese television drama Maskra, and co-created Taħt, a comic book that dives into Maltese folklore through the eyes of two young brothers. Whether writing comics, novellas, or scripts, Ivan is always eager to experiment with genre, structure, and tone.

Geeky even before he knew what a geek was, Ivan writes stories that ask big questions—and occasionally answer them with time travel, weird fog, and, sometimes, words.
