The Batman vs Spiderman Edition – Science Fiction vs Science Fact

Euro Media Forum and Science is Culture in collaboration with Eden Cinemas is organising The Batman vs Spiderman Superhero event – Science Fiction vs Science Fact, taking place on Monday 25th June at 7p.m at the Italian Cultural Institute, St George’s Square, Valletta opposite The Palace (Malta’s Parliament house) and next door to the Attorney General’s Office.

Who will triumph? Batman or Spider-Man, are their superpowers and gadgetry really science fiction or science fact? Could Einstein turn Peter Parker into Spider-Man, probably not, Einstein died eight years before Spiderman was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. But has modern science the capabilities or brain power to create these characters? Back in the 1930s could Batman creator Bob Kane ever have envisioned that the Dark Knight’s gadgetry would inspire so much real life technology? This free event will show how comic book superhero fantasy has become a reality.

During this event Justin Camilleri (the Spider-Man buff) will go head to head with James Ciarlo (the scientist) and David Pace (The Batman fanatic) to explore the scientific truth of Batman and Spider-man, e.g. Batman’s suit, his super gadget car – The Batmobile, DNA modification and its relevance to Spider-Man/Peter Parker’s super ability to climb walls. The speakers will also delve into how these characters stories stimulate learning through their strong messages such as Spider-Man’s responsibility to his family, and an element of scientific truth which can inspire children to take up science as a future career.

The audience is invited to participate and put forward to the panel their likes and dislikes on the Batman/Spiderman characters while also making comparisons between the films, comic books and cartoons, the moderator, Fleur Vella, will fire it all down, promising a heated debate and fantastic entertainment.

The psyche of Bruce Wayne will also be explored and Batman fanatics will be pleased to know that the secrets of the Batcave will be uncovered and Spiderman followers will be given a teaser as to what really happened to Peter Parker’s parents much hinted in the latest film. Much will be said as to how these characters popularity has developed over the years together with their villains, such as the Joker, Penguin and Batman’s latest onscreen villain – the indestructible Bane who features in the upcoming Dark Knight Rises and why many of Spidey’s villains are all scientists, especially his latest nemesis being The Lizard in The Amazing Spiderman release.

To spice up the evening there will also be a quiz, where members of the audience can win Eden Cinema tickets to the 3D Premiere screenings of The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises in July. So quiz participants keep your eyes open on the Batman and Spider-Man clues!
