Neil Marshall, born on 25 May 1970 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, is a British film and television director, writer, producer and editor. He is best known for his work in horror, action and science-fiction films, as well as for directing episodes of several successful television series. Marshall became interested in filmmaking at the age of eleven after watching Raiders of the Lost Ark. Inspired by the film, he began making his own movies using Super 8 film. In 1989, he studied film at Newcastle Polytechnic and later worked as a freelance film editor for several years. His early experience in editing helped him develop the skills needed to become a successful director and filmmaker. Marshall directed his first feature film, Dog Soldiers, in 2002. The horror film became a cult favourite and helped establish his reputation as a director.
His next film, The Descent (2005), was an even greater success. The horror film received critical praise and earned Marshall the British Independent Film Award for Best Director.
