WAVE EIGHT OF GUESTS AND EXHIBITORS FOR MALTA COMIC CON 2017 ANNOUNCED!

Wicked Comics are proud to announce that guests Otto Schmidt, Chris Thompson, David Roach, Sean Azzopardi, Alison Sampson and Marama Corlett as well as exhibitors Shawn Cauchi, Buzzer Anime Manga Centre, Violeta Toncheva, RC World, Danielle Marie Pio, Ryan Zammit Pawley, Martine Ciantar and IPMS Malta – The Society for Scale Modellers will be joining the previously announced guest and exhibitors amongst the highlights of Malta Comic Convention (MCC) 2017. The 9th edition of the Malta Comic Con (MCC) will be held on Saturday 2rd December (10am-6pm) and Sunday 3rd December (11am-7pm) 2017 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.

Otto Schmidt

Born Eugene Schmidt on 1972 in Siberia, Otto currently lives in Cyprus. After working for Disney he joined Marvel Comics in 2015, doing art for Korvac Saga and Secret Wars. In 2016 he joined DC Comics on Green Arrow Rebirth project, along with writer Benjamin Percy, the first issue of which was a huge hit selling over 90k copies.

Chris Thompson

Chris Thompson is a world-renowned comics broadcaster, marketeer, and academic. He has conducted premier panels and workshops at San Diego Comic Con, Comicdom Con Athens, Lakes International Comic Art Festival, Malta Comic Con, NICE Convention, London Super Comic Con, and various other festivals around the world.

His podcast Pop Culture Hound is featured on iTunes and the popular Multiversity Comics site, with past guests including Alan Moore, Gerard Way, Julie Maroh, Mike Mignola & Chuck Palahniuk.

Chris joined Titan Comics as their comics Brand Manager last year on the back of an historic Eisner Award win at San Diego Comic Con, and is the face behind their new world comics imprint, Statix Press.

Besides hosting and participating in Discussion Panels, Chris will also be doing portfolio reviews during the Malta Comic Con.

David Roach

Born in Cardiff 1965, writer and illustrator David Roach started working in comics at the age of 21 after studying fine art and philosophy. Throughout his career he has drew and inked numerous series’ for DC (Batman, Star Trek), Dark Horse (Aliens, Star Wars) Topps (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) and Dynamite (Vampirella). He has also provided illustrations for advertising and games including Dungeons and Dragons. As a writer he has contributed to numerous magazines and is the author or co-author of 15 books including The Warren Companion (Twomorrows), The Art of War (Carlton), Lifestyle Illustrations of the 50s and 60s (Fiell), The Art of Jose Gonzalez, Masters of Spanish Comic Book Art and the Art of Vampirella (all for Dynamite).

David has also provided storyboards for the Warhammer movie and the Da Vinci’s Demons TV series. Besides working on commissions for fans he is currently working on the Dr Who comic strip and Judge Dredd and Judge Anderson for 2000AD. He has many more books on comics in the pipeline and his first solo fine art exhibition is scheduled for Spring 2018.

Sean Azzopardi

Sean Azzopardi is a London-based cartoonist who has been involved with collectives and was a founding member of London Underground Comics. He is also currently involved with The Crouch End Festival and has organised and curated CECAF, Crouch End’s first cartoon festival. He has produced numerous mini comics and books for his Phatcomics imprint, including acclaimed titles such as Ed, Twelve Hour Shift and Drak Matters. He is also working on Vol 3 of Necessary Monsters for First Comics and on his first graphic novel The Voice of the Hall for which he has been awarded a grant from the Arts Council.

Alison Sampson

An award-winning architect and illustrator, Alison’s worked has been published by Image Comics, Marvel, DC/Vertigo, Dark Horse, IDW, Boom Studios, The BBC and The Guardian Newspaper. Her work includes Winnebago Graveyard, Genesis, The Wicked + The Divine, Outlaw Territory, Jessica Jones (Civil War II), Femme Magnifique and Hi-fi Color. Aside from her illustration work, much of Alison’s output can be seen in built form on the streets of her native London. During the Malta Comic Con Alison will have very early copies of the graphic novel Winnebago Graveyard Vol 1 which collects the first mini-series.

Marama Corlett

Born and raised in Malta to Maltese mother and New Zealand father actress Marama Corlett began her career as a professional ballet dancer before transitioning to acting. Marama’s first role was in The Devil’s Double in 2011 directed by Lee Tamahori. She went on to perform in the West End 2011 production of The Children’s Hour directed by Ian Rickson (Jerusalem), opposite Ellen Burstyn, Elizabeth Moss and Keira Knightley. Marama played the series regular role of Rina in the television drama Sinbad for Sky Atlantic and on SyFy in the US. Marama’s other credits include the feature films Desert Dancer alongside Freida Pinto, Maleficent with Angelina Jolie and The Goob with Sean Harris, the TV series Dovekeepers for CBS and AD -The Bible Continues, on NBC and the West End production of The Crucible at The Old Vic Theatre with Richard Armitage. Currently Marama can be seen playing lead role AKI on SyFy’s grind-house series Blood Drive and Sick Note a new dark comedy series for SkyOne playing series regular role of Linda, alongside Rupert Grint, Don Johnson and Nick Frost.

Marama is currently working on The City and the City written by China Miéville, directed by Tom Shankland and sharing the screen with actor David Morrissey out on BBC2 in 2018

Shawn Cauchi

Shawn Cauchi is an artist from the smaller island of Gozo, who likes to work both traditionally and digitally. He is currently studying animation in the course Fine Arts in Digital Arts at the University of Malta with the aim of becoming a character designer/ animator within the Gaming Industry. His art style has been influenced by various things throughout the years; the most prominent being anime and manga, synthwave and vaporwave.

Buzzer Anime Manga Centre

Buzzer Anime Manga Centre are the sole agents in Malta of Italian company DynIt, specializing in the retail of manga books and anime merchandise. They offer their clients a window on the Japanese culture and strive to provide them with the latest products.

Violeta Toncheva

Violeta Toncheva was born in Bulgaria but has been living in Malta for the past 11 years. She is a self-taught illustrator who likes to create fantasy illustrations, manga and comic art in her pursuit of a career as an illustrator and concept artist in the game and film industry.

RC World

RC World was established in 2008 by Stephen Mifsud, With 15 years experience in the retail industry they were the first retail shop to provide hoverboards and spacescooters in Malta. Following their refurbishment on March 2017, they have established a Teddy Mountain franchise (where one can build his own soft toy from start to finish), a Collectables Department and the Harry Potter Shop (Selling Noble Collection Products). The firm strives to provide a unique shopping experience with a positive, can do attitude, to serve their customers with the best possible service.

Danielle Marie Pio

Danielle Marie Pio is a Filipino/Maltese self-taught digital artist who is currently studying at MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts. She creates fan art and original portraits in her free time. Her style is inspired from various digital artists such as WLOP, Guweiz and Sakimichan. This is the first time she will be exhibiting my works at Malta Comic Con 2017.

IPMS Malta – The Society for Scale Modellers

IPMS Malta – The Society for Scale Modellers was founded in January 1981 and is Malta’s representative of the International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS).

Over the past 35 years, the society has consistently promoted the practice of scale modelling and has locally and internationally become synonymous with the high standards in model making of its members. In its continued effort to ensure that this expression of art remains popular, the Society strives to introduce youngsters to the hobby by means of its exhibitions, workshops and courses in scale modelling.

Members meet every Wednesday at the club premises, located in Hamrun, to discuss their latest projects, exchange information and even attend practical sessions and tutorials.

Ryan Zammit Pawley

Ryan Zammit Pawley is an illustrator, animator, designer and film maker. Holding a degree in digital arts he is currently working as an animator and illustrator for an advertising agency. He is also the creator of the graphic novel The Greatest Siege which blends factual events for the great siege of Malta with elements of fantasy.

Martine Ciantar

Martine Ciantar is a 21 year old art student taking a gap year to focus and gain experience in the field of animation and character design. This will be her first appearance as an exhibitor in the Malta Comic Con.
